| Nicholas Bates was born in Birmingham in 1962
and by the time he became Duran Duran's keyboard player at the end of the 70s, he had
become one of the artiest pop stars on the planet. Earlier this year Rhodes was linked
with Tara Palmer Tomkinson but is currently single. Despite the departure of Roger, Andy
and finally John Taylor - Duran Duran are still going. Their single, Somebody Else, Not Me, is out on 8 May. What do you like to wake up to in the morning? Usually the telephone. But not one of those with that horrible Nokia tune. Always buy a phone for its ring. I never ever listen to the radio - all the talking drives me mad. What do you listen to at home? Everything from Shostakovich to Groove Armada. I love the last beck album, a few things on the Chemical Brothers album, some of the Macy Gray album. Do you sing in the shower? No! What if someone heard? What's the most embarrassing record in your collection? I throw things away if they're embarrassing. Someone did give me Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue which I'm not keen on, but I don't suppose it's embarrassing, just something I don't want to play. In the light of recent occurrences, I suppose my Gary Glitter albums. Who would you like to play you in a film of your life? I wish I looked like him and I don't, but I think Johnny Depp is the best young actor around. I'd only want the best one I could find, so I'd have to say him. What do you watch on TV? I watch news. Sky News I like, because you only have to watch it once and then it's the same all day. I watch documentaries - The South Bank Show. And the National Geographic Channel. What's your favourite soap? I don't think I have ever seen an episode of a soap opera in my life. Except perhaps Crossroads when I was a little boy living in Worcestershire. What's the strangest thing you have ever seen on the internet? I quite like the virtual graveyard. If someone dies you can give them a virtual burial space. Who's the most annoying person on TV? The people who read the sports news at the end of the news. I find sport irritating. Apart from tennis, which I don't mind. What's the last film you saw? The new Woody Allen, Sweet and Lowdown. It was great. Sean Penn plays a jazz guitarist - he was remarkable. I also saw Holy Smoke and Being John Malkovich, which I really liked. There was a lot of David Lynch in there in a good way. How do you relax? I collect books. I've got far too many - more than I'll ever be able to read or even look at the pictures in. Culture books, art books, style things, fashion things, movie things What's your idea of the perfect Saturday night? Perhaps the opera and a nice light snack. In Venice. That'd be good. If I'm in London, I usually stay in, lock the shutter and I write. I have ideas about things. Future things for books, movies I write everything down. I suffer from list-ism. Who is your favourite DJ? Grandmaster Flash. We worked with him when we did a cover of his track White Lines. Watching him scratching he was the business. Ever owned a dirty video? One of the Versace fashion shows that someone gave me on video is as close as I've got. What song would you have played at your funeral? Perhaps an entire performance of Stravinsky's Rite of Spring. At least that way I'd have the last laugh. I wouldn't want a Duran Duran song. I've heard them too many times. Imagine if I wasn't quite dead yet Who do you prefer, Mel C or Westlife? Which one is Mel C? The black one or the one from Liverpool? I don't think there is anything I can really say. I'm sure she's very sweet. She's got tattoos, hasn't she? I'm afraid I don't know anything about Westlife. Have you ever owned a dirty video, and if so what was it called? When I was about 14 I had this video, it was like a really dodgy 70s porn movie: proper disgusting. It was called The Agent from S.E.X. I lent it to one of my friends and the last time I heard it had been passed on and passed on and passed on. Apparently it's now in Wolverhampton or something. Finally, what is your most extravagant purchase ever? I must confess that I once bought a Picasso with my American Express card. |
