Top right: Nick Rhodes is the
keyboard player of Duran Duran, the British popband which
made a big impact especially in the early '80s with melodic,
new music, in combination with the stylish extravagant image
of the musicians and artistic videos. The biggest hit was
The Reflex, which made it to the number 1 position on
the charts in many countries. The band members were a
grateful subject for the press for a while. Especially the
spectacular weddings - all the married band members have a
supermodel as wife - were extensively reported in the media.
Nick and actress/photo model Julie Ann Friedman married in
1984, she in a white lace fish-tail dress, he in a pink silk
costume. During the reception at the Savoy Hotel only pink
dishes were served. The last few years it has been
relatively quiet around Duran Duran. Two members, Andy
Taylor and Roger Taylor, have since left the band and were
replaced by Warren Cuccurullo and Sterling Campbell.
'Liberty' is the title of their most recent CD, which
was released in August 1990. But music is just one outlet
for the creative brain of Nick Rhodes. He photographs a lot,
exhibits and published a book with a collection of polaroids
of television screens from around the world. He also paints,
but does not yet dare to show that to the public. In the
future he would also like to direct
films. |

Center, right: The livingroom
is pleasantly lit by the indirect light source in a niche
under the ceiling. The handy side tables, left behind the
deco sofa, are by Eileen Gray and were originally designed
by her in 1927 as breakfast tables for beside the
bed. |

Center, left: The elegant
circular sideboard with a collection of glass objects inside
is also in the living room. The pink chair was newly made
from a design by Joseph
Hoffman. |

Bottom: Nick Rhodes developed his passion for art deco during the time he was living in Paris, an ideal city for admirers of furniture and accessories in this style. He currently lives with his wife and daughter in a Victorian house from 1860 in Chelsea, England. When they bought the house, it was not much more than four walls around a run-down and neglected space. Together with architect Adrian Jones, Rhodes designed an interior in the jazzy atmosphere of the '30s. The interior was completely rebuilt, but the original plaster on the early Victorian facade was entirely restored. Despite Nick's busy tour schedule and long distance traveling, he communicated via fax and telephone with Adrian Jones to be kept totally up to date on the building status. The result is a masterpiece of style. Even though he has now lived here for many years with pleasure, Nick actually thinks it's time for something new. "Next time I might try something Venetian," he says laughing, leaning back in his pink-grey Hollywood armchair. Before that happens, we made a report on this unique art deco interior. If you are inspired by this house and would also like to add an art deco touch, you must be in the posession of a good 'hunting' nose. The best places for original deco items are London and Paris, although they are remarkably more expensive there than in the Netherlands. If you are looking closer to home, you can go to special art deco auctions at De Zon, Christie's and Sotheby's. Other addresses are De Looier and De Vredespijp, both in Amsterdam. There are also antique stores throughout the country specializing in art deco.
