| This
week on Orange Playlist sees Lauren Laverne joined by Nick Rhodes,
keyboardist in one of the world's most influential pop groups - Duran
Duran. Since their debut album in 1981 Duran Duran have sold over
70 million records, with timeless hits like 'Rio', 'The Reflex' and
'A View to a Kill' (the only Bond theme tune to get a Number 1) they
have long cemented themselves in history as pop kings known the world
over. Now with their critically acclaimed album 'Astronaut' they have returned to officially "take back their crown" and rule the world of pop again. Nick Rhodes (on Thursday 20th January at 12.00 ITV) will reveal which tunes have made it into his Orange Playlist - don't miss it! Nick gets off to a flying start with Kraftwerk and 'The Robots' for his track from the past, he explains - "Kraft were very seminal with what I was into. If I ever had to be in another band it would have had to be Kraftwerk really. They made a couple of the best albums that were ever. This song, it's incredible, I love it. I still don't think there has been an electronic band as pure that have come anywhere near Kraftwerk". Nick picks a band making their mark on the music scene for his track from the present -The Killers and 'Somebody Told Me'. "I heard this record about a year or so ago, Simon actually said to me "You've got to hear this, it might remind you of someone'. It's just really good; obviously we smiled at the familiarity of it. It's got energy, a vibe to it and that's really what I missed about music in the 90's. I think they'll do very well". This choice might surprise some fans as Nick chooses "Drop It Like It's Hot" by Snoop Dogg and Pharrell for his track for the future - "I think The Neptunes are very clever and I've always liked Snoop, so for me it's a great collaboration. I think Hip-Hop is really great at producing an 'event' record, something that's special and different that catches the vibe like this one does. Our roots have always been in black music, good white rock music has always been nicked from brilliant black music". Nick harks back to his art school days for his dedication track 'Venus In Furs' by The Velvet Underground - "They were a huge influence on me, the ultimate art school band. Their first album was just so inspired. I know Andy Warhol helped produce them and whatever he did for them it certainly worked. So, I am going to dedicate this song to all the girls out there with beautiful shoes." It's David Bowie who's influenced Nick the most and he's chosen 'Life on Mars' for his all time favourite track - "I think David Bowie owned the 70's. When you think of what he did it's just such a mind-boggling amount of work, all very inspired and very different - it was a real journey. I think David, more than anyone, allowed artists the luxury of being able to experiment. For his bravery alone I think we should play a David Bowie song. I could have picked any one of them but I've picked this because of the video. I saw it when I was about 10 and there was a lot of backstage stuff going on and that was so exciting to me. It's a great song." The show featuring Nick Rhodes will air on Thursday 20th January 05' on ITV1 12.00 and will be repeated on ITV2 Friday 21st January at 8.00pm. This is the eighteenth show in the 26 week series, each show sees a celebrity guest revealing their favourite tracks from the past, present and future, a dedication track and finally - their all time favourite tune. As well as Nick's ultimate playlist, the show also features the three unique Orange Playlist charts revealing what's hot and what's not that week. Members of the public shape The Download Chart, featuring favourite tracks of the week as downloaded by them on mobile phones and websites (e.g. itunes). The Hot Chart of popular culture lists the Top 5 of the week's movers and shakers in entertainment news - as defined through column inches, retail sales and internet search engine results.
