Archibald had 2 wives and 2 families. The Tool Family record says Barbara kicked him out but he came back during winters to feed his horses on the grain and hay raised by her and their children during the summer. He had a 2nd family up north and that as a teamster hauling loads he would go up there, stay a while, then come back down to Virginia. This was the reason that Adam M. Tool changed his name. He had a grist mill, and it might have been in Virginia.

Adam Tool was the first white settler to come to Jasper Co., Iowa and stay. [Tool Family Record]

His Inn, located on their family farm, was popular, partly due to the fact that it contained the first cook stove in the country. [Tool Family Record]

Adam M. Tool's will: left $300 to Adolphus T. Fleenor to be under the control of his guardian until he reaches age 21. Also left a portion of his estate to Laura Moore, daughter of Martha C. Moore, to be under the control of a guardian until she reaches 18. Lastly, the balance of his estate goes to a perpetual scholarship at Iowa Weslayan University, in the care of James A. Tool. Executors of his will were James A. Tool and John M. Tool. Attested by Daniel Hiskey and Oliver Cowles, 22 Oct 1877.

In the 1850 Jasper, Iowa Census, the column "persons over 20 years of age who cannot read and write" is checked next to Adam M. Tool's name. He is enumerated with his wife, several children, and granddaughter Cassandra Hill. Also enumerated with his family are David Jenkins, age 21, a stage driver born in Ohio; and Thomas Turner, also age 21 and a stage driver, born in England.

According to the USGenNet Historical and Genealogical Data Exchange, John J. Tool and Adam M. Tool were one of the first pioneers of Woodford Co., Virginia.

According to the USGenNet Historical and Genealogical Data Exchange, Adam and several others started out on 23 April 1843 to find a location in Jasper County to settle (county was officially opened for settlement on May 1st), and he made his way to Monroe and placed his stake. In 1851 he laid out the town of Monroe. He also erected the first hewed log house in Jasper County. It also says that he and his wife kept a hotel "in the early days, and their home was headquarters for all the travelers."
