| Mrs.
Fannie Glaspey Barnum, 80, native of Johnson county and resident of here
for many years, died at 8:45 p.m. Tuesday in her home at 335 South Lucas
street after an extended illness. Mrs. Barnum was born May 15, 1870, the daughter of John and Catherine McKnight Glaspey. She grew up in the Iowa City community and attended public schools here. She also studied at Iowa State Teachers college at Cedar Falls and afterward taught in Johnson county rural schools. She was married to Edwin Barnum, who died shortly afterward. For a number of years Mrs. Barnum taught in the Indian school at Santa Fe, N.M., and then lived in succeeding years at Washington, D.C., where she was employed by the federal government. After her retirement, Mrs. Barnum lived in California, and a few years ago she returned to Iowa City to live with her sisters, Sarah, Emma and Rose Glaspey. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church here, of the King's Daughters and of the Women's Christian Temperance Union. Surviving her are one sister, Rose Glaspey, with whom she made her home; three brothers, Wallace, of Iowa City, Charles, of Independence, and Warren, of Fresno, Calif. Five brothers and five sisters, including Sarah and Emma Glaspey, preceded her in death. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Oathout funeral chapel, with Dr. P. Hewison Pollock, pastor of the First Presbyterian church, officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens. |
