HONOR GOUDIES ON 50TH ANNIVERSARY

Relatives and Friends at Sunday Event

Not only a golden wedding anniversary, but a general homecoming was featured last Sunday at the Robert Goudie home, an even which was crowded with interesting and unusual happenings. The yard was full of cars with license plates from California, Virginia, Dakota, Canada and Oklahoma, coming from the four extremes of the United States to help this fine couple celebrate this important event.

The fact that the only two who attended the wedding fifty years ago were able to be here at the wedding anniversary was perhaps the most amazing circumstance. These two were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Loper of Lamoni, Iowa. All four people, who made up this bridal party fifty years ago, are well and able to get about and enjoy life.

Mrs. Goudie is one of 12 children and her entire family, except 1 brother, Richard Glaspey, of Columbus, N. Dakota, were present Sunday. In most cases the wives and husbands accompanied these brothers and sisters and in some cases the children came along. It was literally a house party for all of these 105 relatives stayed at the Goudie home. Tents were put up and the yard was about as full as the house. Many of the relatives have been here several days, especially those who came from a distance.

Dinner Big Event

Of course the dinner at noon was the big event. A long bridal table was arranged the full length of two rooms, and there were 28 at this table, these including Mr. and Mrs. Goudie, Mr. and Mrs. Loper and the brothers and sisters of Mrs. Goudie with their husbands or wives. The table was nicely decorated with rose and gold, with the gold predominating. Two large baskets of flowers carried out the color scheme. Nut cups were gold with place cards attached. There were two wedding cakes. One was a three tier affair topped with a miniature bride and groom under a swinging bell. These were contributed by Mrs. Arthur Baird and Mrs. Charles Baird of Los Angeles, Calif. Another very pretty cake came from relatives in Council Bluffs. This was decorated with a bride and groom, and also love birds and tiny water lilies in pastel shades. Both cakes showed the fifty years in gold letters.

After the dinner pictures were taken and Mr. and Mrs. Goudie were presented with a purse of money as well as other very lovely gifts. Many cards and telegrams were received, which added to the pleasure of the day.

Robert Goudie was born June 8, 1866, at Hawleyville, Iowa. He is the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Goudie. His parents came in a covered wagon to Iowa and stopped at the Icarian Colony here to rest and clean up before going on to their destination.

Mrs. Goudie, (Mary Glaspey) daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Silas Glaspey, was born in 1868, in Johnson county, near Iowa City. She came to Taylor county when she was one year old, her family locating in that county. Mr. and Mrs. Goudie were married at Red Oak June 27, 1887. The children are Mrs. Minnie Martindale of Broadwater, Nebraska; Mrs. Wilda Brunnett of Taylor county, and John R. of Dahlgren, Va. The children were all here Sunday. Mr. Goudie has been a farmer most of his life. He worked in a furniture store in Clarinda for five years and came to Corning in 1911 and worked in a furniture store here for William McCoy. He has operated a small farm northeast of town and for a number of years has followed the business of auctioneer.

Brothers and Sisters

The brothers and sisters of Mrs. Goudie, who have had the blessing of an unbroken family for so long, are: Charles Glaspey, Los Angeles, Calif.; John of Okamulgee, Okla.; Will, North Gate, Canada; Albert, North Liberty, Iowa; Wallace, Iowa City, Iowa; Francis, Hills, Iowa; Warren, Okamulgee, Okla.; Mrs. Ellen Bywater, Lignite, North Dakota; Mrs. Tina Baird, Los Angeles, Calif.; Mrs. Carrie Alberts of Lone Tree, Iowa; and Richard Glaspey of Columbus, North Dakota. Richard was the only one of her eleven brothers and sisters who was unable to come. Dan Goudie, 84, a cousin of Mr. Goudie, , was the oldest person present. He came from Bedford, Iowa. Mr. and Mrs. Goudie have 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

It was really a most interesting sight to see this big, devoted family all together. Monday there was a cafeteria dinner being spread for about fifty people who were still here. Imagine getting three meals a day for that kind of family! But the fun they were having filled the outsider with envy.

Mr.and Mrs. Goudie have the best wishes and certainly the congratulations of a large circle of friends and acquaintances. They are fine people - the kind which makes a community better and happier.
